More Than a Cucumber: Getting Life Back
August 1, 2026
There are moments at the Community Care Clinic that perfectly capture why we’re here.
This was one of those moments.
Several years ago, one of our beloved patients experienced a stroke. Like many stroke survivors, “Miguel” faced the difficult reality that everyday activities suddenly became incredibly challenging. One of the greatest losses for him wasn’t just physical—it was personal.
He could no longer cook.
For many people, cooking is simply another household chore. For him, it was something he loved. It was how he cared for himself and others. It was a source of pride, independence, and joy.
But in July, working alongside our Winston-Salem State University Occupational Therapy team, Miguel practiced chopping vegetables. As he did, he shared that it was the first time he had been able to do anything like this since his stroke.
It was a simple moment.
It was also extraordinary.
Healthcare is often associated with diagnoses, medications, and procedures. Those things are important, but healing is also about helping people reclaim the parts of life that illness or injury has taken away.
It’s about making it possible for someone to prepare a favorite meal.
It’s about restoring confidence after years of uncertainty.
It’s about giving someone the opportunity to say, “I can do this again.”
That is exactly what happens every day at the Community Care Clinic.
Whether we’re helping a patient manage diabetes, providing dental care that allows someone to smile again, offering counseling that restores hope, or supporting stroke recovery through occupational therapy, our goal is always the same: helping people live healthier, fuller, more independent lives.
Miguel’s victory wasn’t measured by how perfectly a cucumber was chopped.
It was measured by the smile on his face and the confidence that returned with every careful slice.
That’s the kind of impact your generosity makes possible.
Thank you for helping us change lives—one patient, one breakthrough, and yes, one chopped cucumber at a time.
